What the Camera Model tag actually means
Model identifies the exact product. Unlike Make, it distinguishes between variants — an iPhone 15 Pro Max and an iPhone 15 Pro are separate values, and often the regional variant code is included.
Why it matters
Model narrows the population of devices enormously. A photo from a specific high-end model plus a serial number can be traced to a specific unit. Even without the serial, the model can reveal what kind of equipment someone owns.
What to do about it
Remove it if you would rather not advertise your hardware. It is one of the easiest tags to strip and one of the most commonly requested in privacy cleanups.
Who writes this tag
The camera or phone firmware.

Tag IDs and encodings are taken from the CIPA DC-007-Translation (Exif 3.0) and ISO/IEC 21222-1 specifications. The privacy rating is our own editorial judgement, based on what each field can uniquely identify. Every entry in this reference is checked against real files produced by the cameras, phones and editors we test with.

The manufacturer of the camera, such as Canon, Sony, Nikon or Apple. It identifies the brand of device that produced the file.
The make, model and sometimes serial number of the lens attached to the camera. The most over-precise field in the entire EXIF block.
A unique serial number for the exact camera body. It identifies one specific physical device in the world and is the strongest non-location identifier in a photo.
The application that last wrote the file — a camera firmware, a phone, or an editor such as Lightroom or Photoshop. It can reveal your editing workflow.
Camera Model FAQ
Common questions about the EXIF camera model tag, its values and its privacy implications.
Is Camera Model sensitive information?
It is metadata about your hardware rather than about you. It carries more weight than the Make tag because it narrows the device down to a specific product, and it becomes personally identifying when paired with a serial number.
Can EXIF Model identify a phone?
Yes. iPhones and many Android devices write the exact model string, including regional SKU variants such as SM-S928B, so the specific handset can often be identified.
